Charles Walbridge: Why I Support CHI

Charles Walbridge: Why I Support CHI

I am a photographer at the Minneapolis Institute of Art in Minnesota. In my 12 years on the job, digital photography has evolved as an increasingly critical and powerful practice for museums. As I pursued digitization techniques, I discovered Reflectance Transformation Imaging (RTI) and the nonprofit that has nurtured it from the beginning: Cultural Heritage Imaging (CHI).

RTI has transformed the study of the surface, shape, and color of objects. After I learned RTI and incorporated it into my workflow at the museum, I took CHI’s training in photogrammetry to learn how to produce scientific 3D documentation. It was a fantastic class, and I expect the technique to become a gold standard for museum photographers like me.

My experience with CHI leads me to a sense of gratitude. CHI and their worldwide network of cultural heritage collaborators are at the cutting edge of these digital technologies so I don't have to be. CHI “speaks our language,” providing museum professionals with a framework for understanding and adopting new methods for digitizing our cultural treasures. And CHI is dedicated to making these technologies available to everyone with open source software and free user materials.

Like me, you will want to make a gift to CHI so they can continue to support those who care for our museums and their treasures. Please give generously to CHI!
